What is Engineering?

Engineering is a broad field that encompasses many disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, and aerospace engineering. Each discipline has its own unique set of challenges and requires a different set of skills and knowledge. However, they all share a common goal: to use their expertise to create innovative solutions to real-world problems. From designing a more fuel-efficient engine to developing a new drug to treat a disease, engineers play a crucial role in shaping our world and improving the quality of life for everyone.

Product Development, also known as product management, consists of conceptualising, designing and marketing processes of a branded product throughout its life-cycle. This process is carried out in order to fulfil the clients’ requirements and to adapt to the ever-shifting market conditions.

Reverse Engineering is a term for the exact reproduction of a master model following the detailed examination of its construction. It is practiced in various industries and traditionally used to analyze another company’s product for benchmarking.

Topology optimization is a computer-controlled process to calculate an object’s optimal shape. For this, the software discretizes a domain into individuals. A practical example is a programme that finds the strongest possible structure with a given volume of material in a rough design space.

Dynamic stress can be obtained from the experiment (sensor or assembly sensor on a physical component) or simulation. Using simulation, a representative load history should be created that includes inertia forces and external forces (e.g. common reaction forces and torques) before calculating the correct dynamic stress. Multi-body dynamic analysis methods (discussed in Chapter 3), typically used for dynamic motion analysis, can be used for dynamic load analysis of mechanical systems. All bodies of the dynamic model are generally assumed to be rigid. The rigid body assumption for the suspension components of a vehicle often yields reasonably accurate analysis results to support structural design for durability.
