Urethane Casting

What is Urethane Casting?

Urethane Casting, which involves producing a silicone mold to create a geometric object, is widely recognized as a low-volume manufacturing alternative that offers a straightforward means of replicating an original component.

How to Make Urethane Casting

In order to produce a replica, there must be a master model. This master model can be 3D printed, created with CNC machines or manufactured using any other method. Creating a master model can take time but Urethane Casting saves a significant amount of time in the overall manufacturing cycle.

First the master model which is the desired form of the product is situated in a closed environment. Then a semi-liquid moulding material, silicone is placed around it which forms a thick coat. The curing time changes depending on what type of silicone is used. At this point, the mould should not be touched or moved.

The silicone coat can be detached from the manufactured object after the silicone is cured. Carefully cut the silicone and remove the master model. Then the silicone coat remains the same with the shape of the master model contained within. The cavities in the silicone can be filled with the casting material of your choice (such as clay & resin).

Tips for Urethane Casting:

  • Spray the inside of the cavity with “mould release” before pouring the material in to make the removal easier
  • Using professional casting materials creates high-quality silicone tools
  • Make sure to manufacture a new silicone mould before the previous one begins producing low quality parts (as silicone mould life is around 20 – 30 shots)
